Suspect struck by car, killed on Phoenix freeway while fleeing officers

PHOENIX — A robbery suspect running from police was struck and killed by a vehicle on a freeway in Phoenix on Wednesday night.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said in an email that the unidentified man was killed while attempting to cross Interstate 10 on foot near 51st Avenue.

The suspect was running from officers following a chase that began when he and a 22-year-old male allegedly stole lottery tickets from a Circle K near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street.

Officers spotted the men, who fled the scene in a stolen 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, in the area of 39th Avenue and McDowell Road and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The vehicle fled and was involved in an accident near 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road before continuing on the I-10 and exiting the freeway on 51st Avenue. No one was injured in the crash.

The vehicle crashed into a sign structure near McDowell Road. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested shortly after.

Westbound I-10 was closed for several hours before it was reopened early Thursday morning.

The investigation is ongoing.
