Suspect wounded in September police shooting in Phoenix released from hospital, taken to jail

PHOENIX – Nearly two months after he was shot by police during an incident in Phoenix that left two officers injured, a suspect was released from the hospital and taken to jail last week, authorities said.

Francisco Torres, 22, was booked on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Friday, according to jail records. His bond was set at $500,000.

Torres had been hospitalized since he was wounded on Sept. 2 while allegedly exchanging gunfire with officers at an apartment near 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The shooting occurred while the Phoenix PD Special Assignment Unit was serving a warrant related to an ongoing investigation around 11:35 a.m.

Why did police shoot suspect in Phoenix?

As officers were forcing the door open, Torres allegedly fired multiple rounds at them. One officer shot back, striking the suspect, police said.

One officer sustained a gunshot wound that wasn’t life-threatening. Another suffered unspecified injuries that required hospital treatment.

The wounded suspect was hospitalized with injuries that were considered life-threatening at the time. A handgun police believe Torres used to fire at officers was found at the scene.

Two other men who were inside the apartment were unhurt. They were detained after the shooting, police said.

Body-camera footage from the shooting was included in a critical incident briefing released by police on Sept. 16.

The incident is being investigated by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
