Suspect arrested in relation to investigation of New River pastor’s death

PHOENIX — A suspect was arrested on Friday in connection to the investigation of a New River man who was murdered earlier this year, authorities said.

Pastor William Schonemann, 76, was killed under suspicious circumstances on April 28, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

MCSO continued the investigation while releasing very few details on Schonemann’s death. Detectives did not want to jeopardize the investigation.

Schonemann’s death was ruled a homicide and was an isolated event, according to MCSO.

The suspect is in custody under unrelated charges in a different jurisdiction.

Law enforcement agencies are working together to move the case forward.

Detectives hope to release more details in the coming weeks, according to MCSO.
