Suspect in custody after shots fired on ASU campus in Tempe

PHOENIX – One person is in custody after shots were fired at a student and a police officer on the grounds of Arizona State University in Tempe early Thursday, campus police said.

The ASU Police Department said officers were called around 1:30 a.m. about a man with a gun by Barrett Honors College near Apache Boulevard and Rural Road.

Police arrived and less than five minutes later an officer reported shots fired. The suspect fired multiple times before running off but was caught quickly, police said.

Police said they found a gun and a cellphone in shrubs outside the honors college.

The university’s safety app notified those in the area at 1:39 a.m. to shelter in place, seven minutes after the shots were fired.

The suspect was not affiliated with the school, police said and charges against him were pending.

“Incidents like this always have the potential for a tragic outcome, but immediate community action and a quick police response helped ensure no one was hurt today,” campus police Chief Michael Thompson said in a press release.

The shelter-in-place directive was lifted at 2:30 a.m. and the all-clear went out around 6 a.m.

The suspect has not been identified.
