Suspect identified, charged in drive-by shooting at Phoenix courthouse

PHOENIX — A suspect who was arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting outside a federal court building in downtown Phoenix that left a security guard wounded was identified Wednesday.

Court documents allege that James Lee Carr shot the security guard in front of the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse, located at the corner of Washington Street and Fourth Avenue, at about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Family members said Carr told them he shot the guard because he was harassing him, according to court documents.

Carr was booked Tuesday on two federal counts, assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm during a violent crime.

The court security officer works for the U.S. Marshals Service and was hit in a protective vest, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The Phoenix Police Department said one person was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life threatening.

David Gonzales with the U.S. Marshal District of Arizona says Carr is in U.S. Marshal custody and has a court appearance in federal court tomorrow.
