Suspect charged with murder in bizarre Scottsdale bicycle incident

PHOENIX — After a six-month investigation, a suspect accused of killing a man in a bizarre Scottsdale bicycle incident was arrested Wednesday, authorities said.

Daniel James Hinton, 49, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for his alleged role the Feb. 22 incident, the Scottsdale Police Department said in a news release Thursday.

Bryan Blair, 58, was riding a bicycle on Scottsdale Road near McDowell Road that evening when a man entered the roadway and stuck a long metal object into the front spokes, causing the bike to stop.

Blair was thrown onto the street and suffered life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene in nearby vehicle.

After three weeks in the hospital, Blair died March 14.

With no suspect, Scottsdale police investigators sought the public’s help for information about the case.

They received tips identifying Hinton as a possible suspect and used surveillance videos, witness testimony and other evidence to place him at the scene, the release said.

No information about whether the incident was random or if the suspect knew the victim was provided.
