Suspect arrested for allegedly killing man in fight over fake AirPods in Mesa

PHOENIX — A 21-year-old suspect was arrested after allegedly fatally shooting a 19-year-old man during an altercation over fake AirPods in Mesa, authorities said Wednesday.

Kenyada Bass, 21, was booked into jail Tuesday following the incident that occurred Friday evening.

Police responded to shots fired near Southern Avenue and Longmore at about 9 p.m. and found Bass and Garry Anau, 19, with gunshot wounds.

Both men were taken to a hospital, where Anau was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Witnesses told police Anau had purchased fake AirPods from Bass a few days prior.

Anau and two other men arranged a second meeting with Bass, who showed up with a handgun, according to authorities.

Police say the altercation took place after an argument over the validity of the AirPods and Bass fired his weapon, striking Anau and himself in the foot.

Bass faces class two felony charges including one count of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault, according to authorities.
