Survey: 15 percent of UA students reported sexual assault or misconduct

PHOENIX — Fifteen percent of University of Arizona students reported being sexually assaulted or a similar misconduct, a survey showed.

The American Association of Universities surveyed 27 colleges as part of its Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Assault and Misconduct. It found UA’s percentage of reported non-consensual sexual acts matched the national figure of 15 percent.

Undergraduate females reported above-average sexual assaults or misconducts.

“Twenty-two percent of females report non-consensual sexual contact involving physical force or incapacitation,” Mary Beth Tucker, assistant vice president for equity compliance and Title IX coordinator at the University of Arizona, said.

Tucker said it’s not just women who report incidents of non-consensual contact.

“We are seeing that non-heterosexual students have a higher rate of reports, and students with disabilities are reporting higher incidents,” she said.

Tucker said the school requires mandatory online training for students in the prevention and response to any form of sex-based discrimination. The training includes how to report and respond to any sexual misconduct and how to support another student who may be dealing with this behavior.
