Surprise Police Department fills chief position from within

PHOENIX – The Surprise Police Department is filling its chief position from within.

Lt. Evan Becher, who joined the force as a patrol officer in 2007 and worked his way up, will take over the top position, City Manager Bob Wingenroth announced Wednesday.

“Evan has both long and wide-ranging policing experience, as well as a deep-rooted connection to our city,” Wingenroth said in a press release. “He is passionate about fostering strong relationships within the community and is known for his collaborative leadership style and forward-thinking vision. I am excited to see how he advances the department in this new role.”

What is Evan Becher’s experience with Surprise Police Department?

Becher has served in the Surprise Police Patrol Division, Investigations Division, Training Unit and Tactical Support Division.

He also has experience managing multiple specialty units — including bike patrol, K-9 and jail transport – and developed the city’s first full-time SWAT team.

Becher, who was selected from among 44 applicants, will assume his new role on June 9.

Until then, Assistant Chief Charles Morin will continue serving as interim chief. Morin has been leading the department since former Chief Benny Piña retired after nearly four years on the job earlier this month.
