Surprise police arrest teen suspected of making threats to elementary school

PHOENIX — A teen was arrested Monday after being accused of posting threatening messages directed at an elementary school in Surprise, authorities said.

The 14-year-old posted to a social media account that they would “shoot up” West Point Elementary School on Monday, according to the Surprise Police Department.

The threats were reported to police by a Dysart Unified School District official.

“This type of activity is not funny, it’s not a joke or a prank,” Surprise Police Chief Benny Pina said in a press release.

“Threats of violence against our schools will not be tolerated. If you make a threat against our schools, we will find you and you will be arrested.”

The teen, whose named was not release because they are a minor, was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center on one count of interference with or disruption of an educational institution and one count of making a terrorist threat.
