PHOENIX — The city of Surprise is playing host to several national amateur tennis tournaments during the month of November and expects to see a strong economic benefit as a result.
The city is hosting five United State Tennis Association League Tennis National Championship tournaments that will see roughly 2,800 players come to the city to compete.
“It’s really exciting we have players from Maine, and from Florida, and from New Hampshire, and from California and Seattle,” Mark Coronado, community recreation services director with the city of Surprise said. “Surprise is becoming the choice of USTA and we’re looking to increase the opportunities here.”
Coronado said the city is becoming a destination for amateur tennis thanks to the city’s Tennis and Racquet Complex.
“The USTA was looking for a facility that had 25 courts, and the 25 courts create the opportunity for these kinds of events,” he said.
Over the course of the five tournaments in Surprise, Coronado said the city should see an economic impact of between $1.5 and $2 million, mostly through lodging, restaurant and retail spending.
“We’ve talked to four of our hotels, we’ve got about 750 room nights here in Surprise (and) we understand that four of the hotels are at 100 percent capacity,” Coronado said.
The tournaments are open to the public and more information can be found on the Tennis and Racquet Complex website.
