Suburban Phoenix park staff hit trails with water, safety warning

GLENDALE, Ariz. — There have been several mountain rescues of hikers this year in the Valley but there have also been fatalities.

With another hot weekend coming, Glendale Parks and Recreation hit the trails Friday morning at Thunderbird Conservation Park to deliver a message to visitors: be safe, drink water.

Glendale spokeswoman Tamra Ingersoll said department staffers will be passing out water and safety flyers at the park near 59th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.

“We see lots of hikers here … (these are) some of the most pristine trails in Glendale. We have hikers, bikers, equestrian riders. We get a lot of people in this park,” Ingersoll said.

Thunderbird Conservation Park takes up 1,185 acres, including 20 miles of trails.

Dehydration is the No. 1 cause of weather-related deaths nationwide. More than tornadoes, floods, snowstorms and hurricanes combined.

Weekend temperatures were expected to be in the 107-110 degrees range.
