Storm blows through East Valley, brings heavy rain Thursday night

PHOENIX — A storm blew through the East Valley on Thursday night, bringing heavy rainfall and knocking out power to thousands.

A flash flood warning was issued for most of the East Valley and was set to expire early in the morning on Friday after more than two inches of rain fell in an hour in Scottsdale, according to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

The storm was capable of producing winds in excess of 40 m.p.h. and pea-size hail.

Power was knocked out to more than 7,000 people during the storm, according to SRP.

More than a half-inch of rain also fell in Tempe and near Sky Harbor Airport.

Drivers are advised not to cross a flooded wash, even if it doesn’t look deep because a few inches of running water could still pose a serious risk.

ADOT also warns people to not drive around road-closed signs as it is not only a risk but violators could be cited under state law.

People are advised to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance between vehicles during storms, avoid sudden braking that can cause sliding on wet pavement as well as reducing speed by slowly taking your foot off the gas pedal and braking slowly.
