Stanton calls resignation of PUHSD superintendent ‘a great loss’

PHOENIX — Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Kent Scribner is leaving to become the superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District in Fort Worth, Texas.

Scribner has been Phoenix Union superintendent since 2008, after he held the same position for 5 years at Phoenix’s Isaac School District.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said that losing Scribner is “a great loss for the district.” He praised Scribner for improving Phoenix high schools.

“He was able to increase the grade level of almost every single high school in the district to A and B,” Stanton said. “He increased the rigor of the curriculum.  He understood that every single student graduating from that district system needed to be college and career ready.”

Stanton said that he is confident that the Phoenix Union High School District will have a bright future without Scribner.

“They’ve got an outstanding school board, and Kent Scribner has done an outstanding job mentoring others,” Stanton said. “That district won’t skip a beat, and it’s going to continue to move ahead in a very positive direction.”

Texas state law requires that there be a 21-day waiting period before Scribner’s contract is finalized. He is expected to start working his new job in Fort Worth sometime this fall.

There is no word yet on who will replace him in Phoenix.
