Armed suspect in domestic dispute dead after standoff with Phoenix police

PHOENIX — A man is dead after a standoff with Phoenix police while a woman and child were locked at an apartment, authorities said.

Police responded to a fight call near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road around 6 a.m. on Sunday, where officers found the woman and child behind a locked wrought‑iron gate in a backyard.

After forcing their way through the back gate using a Halligan tool, officers removed the woman and child safely.

Officers then saw the suspect holding a shotgun inside and told him to drop the gun, but he did not comply, authorities said.

The standoff that followed lasted more than an hour, and the suspect fired several rounds, including one that damaged and disabled a law enforcement drone.

Officers returned fire.

The Special Assignments Unit arrived and used another drone to locate the suspect inside the apartment. Detectives then entered the apartment and found the suspect in critical condition.

The Phoenix Fire Department later pronounced the suspect dead, authorities said.

Multiple tenants of the complex were advised of the situation so they could be evacuated. No residents or officers were injured.

Detectives said the man and woman were in a dating relationship, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety will investigate the incident.
