Stage 2 fire restrictions to expand across Coconino, Kaibab forests

PHOENIX — Two national forests in northern Arizona will move to Stage 2 fire restrictions this weekend because of increased danger.

The Coconino and Kaibab national forests will implement the restriction at 8 a.m. on Saturday in hopes of preventing human-caused wildfires during potentially dangerous conditions.

Increased restrictions include the prohibition of fires, campfires, charcoal, and coal and wood stoves.

Parkgoers will also not be allowed to smoke unless they are in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or in an area that is cleared of any flammable material.

Welding and chainsaw operations will also be suspended as part of the upgraded restrictions.

The Bill Williams Mountain watershed near Williams, part of the Kaibab National Forest, will temporarily close as well due to the area’s high risk for wildfire activity.

The Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions on Wednesday.

Stage 2 fire restrictions began being put in place in Arizona forests on May 12.

The restrictions will remain in place until fire danger levels lower to an acceptable point.

Violators of the restrictions could result in a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment up to six months or both.
