South Phoenix school provides food for students to fill their backpacks

PHOENIX — Several Phoenix elementary school kids filled up their backpacks with more than just books Thursday.

Students at Nevitt Elementary School — part of the Tempe elementary district — packed their backpacks with food as part of national “Blessings in a Backpack Day.”

“We’re able to stuff about 350 backpacks in about 30 minutes and get the kids back to class,” said Andrew Lebowitz, principal of the Nevitt school, which is located near 48th Street and Southern Avenue.
