Dozens of Arizonans have reported delays in Social Security checks

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said she might file another lawsuit against the Trump administration in order to secure Social Security access for Arizonans.

“We have received more than three dozen reports already from people who say they have not received their check in a timely fashion,” Mayes told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce and Gaydos on Tuesday.

Disruptions in the process by which Arizonans receive their Social Security checks are unacceptable, she added.

Mayes said 45% of Arizona Social Security recipients over the age of 65 rely on their checks for about half of their total income.

In addition to the check delays, Mayes said her office has received complaints about other Social Security disruptions.

“The other people told us things like they were hung up on by Social Security when they tried to call in to change their direct deposit information or their address,” Mayes said. “They had trouble getting a hold of a human being to be able to do that. They had trouble going into an office to get that done, essentially delaying their receipt or their ability to get Social Security.”

These kinds of disruptions disturbed Mayes, who said she wants to do all she can to protect Arizonans who rely on Social Security.

“We’re going to drill down further on this information, but it very well could end up being evidence in a lawsuit that we file,” Mayes said.

Mayes, a Democrat, has had Arizona join 11 multistate lawsuits against the Trump administration.

“We haven’t really lost a single one of these lawsuits. We’ve gotten temporary restraining orders in almost every single one of them,” Mayes said. “That’s really hard to do.”

She said she’ll stop suing Trump when he stops violating the Constitution.

In the meantime, she wanted to encourage Arizonans who are scared about losing their Social Security checks under Trump’s presidency.

“We put up on our website a page where people can go to report any disturbances to their checks if they are not getting their check or if they’re having trouble getting a hold of Social Security,” Mayes said.
