Social media captures images of flooding in Phoenix area

PHOENIX — Heavy rain in parts of the Phoenix area led to flooding in washes and streets Tuesday morning, with video warnings getting posted to social media.

The National Weather Service said rain totals at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport had reached more than 2 inches just two days into October, making it one of the wettest Octobers on record.

The weather service said Tuesday has become the wettest October day ever, and the eighth wettest day ever, with a total of 2.35 inches of rain as of 5:30 p.m.

Tropical Depression Rosa, which began as a hurricane off the coast of Mexico last weekend, has dropped record rain for October, the National Weather Service said.

Tuesday’s rainfall and subsequent flooding caused school closures and traffic problems — several intersections filled with water.

Everyone — from state agencies to professional weather watchers to KTAR News 92.3 FM reporters — posted videos and images online of the rushing waters.

Heavy rain on Monday flooded streets the city Yuma at the U.S.-Mexico border and caused power outages in parts of the city. At least six roads in Tucson were closed because of flash flooding.
