Snowstorm in Rockies cancels, delays flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor

PHOENIX – A snowstorm in the Rocky Mountains that has prompted blizzard condition warnings has also disrupted air travel to and from Phoenix.

Thousands of passengers have been stranded at Sky Harbor Airport on Tuesday, starting early in the morning. By 8:30 a.m. at least 90 flights had been canceled or delayed as the Thanksgiving holiday neared.

The majority of affected flights were based in Terminal 4, home to American and Southwest airlines.

Airlines shut down flights to Flagstaff; Omaha, Nebraska; Denver; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, among others.

In Denver, as much as 10 inches had fallen overnight, forcing schools and government offices to close.

The airport had accumulated 7 inches of snow in what is already the fifth-snowiest storm in three years, according to a news report.

Across the country, more than 500 flights were canceled and nearly that many were delayed.
