Snow plasters Flagstaff, other parts of northern Arizona

PHOENIX – Snow plows went to work early Friday in Flagstaff, where almost 10 inches fell during a winter storm that only dropped light rain on metro Phoenix.

About one-tenth of an inch of rain hit the streets and homes in the Valley before the sun was up, according to the official gauge at Phoenix Sky Harbor. It was enough to make the morning commute a slippery trip.

By contrast, the same system was dumping snow in higher elevations.

Flagstaff Unified School District delayed the start of classes by two hours.

“We’re expecting that snow to continue through the day. … We could see anywhere between 4 to 6 more inches today,” meteorologist Mark Stubblefield at the National Weather Service bureau in Flagstaff said.

“With any accumulating snow on the roads, it become slick very quickly. Even when driving slowly, some roads can be slick. Use extra caution when driving across the north country today,” Stubblefield said.

On the season, Flagstaff has accumulated around 69 inches of snow; the winter average through mid-March is 81.5 inches, and 101 overall.
