SNAP benefits to resume on regular schedule, Arizona Department of Economic Security says

PHOENIX — Arizonans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could see their long-awaited aid as early as Friday, according to the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES).

“SNAP clients could see benefits issued to their EBT cards as early as Nov. 7,” a DES spokesperson told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday. “On Nov. 8, DES will resume its regular issuance schedule.”

Gov. Katie Hobbs said this is possible because DES approved the transmission of benefit payment files, allowing Arizona residents to receive their full USDA-funded SNAP benefits for November.

Her announcement came the same day the USDA said it was complying with a federal court order to fully fund the benefits for the rest of the month.

The new guidance published on the agency’s website marks the latest development in a prolonged crisis that has jeopardized essential food aid for nearly 42 million Americans — including around 900,000 Arizonans — amid the federal government shutdown.

“It is shameful that the Trump administration delayed lifesaving food assistance payments to Arizonans for weeks,” Hobbs said in a Friday announcement. “The chaos and confusion created by the administration sent over 800,000 Arizonans and their families scrambling to figure out where their next meal was coming from.”

The chaos she referred to stems from the ever-shifting narrative issued by President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to the Associated Press, there has been significant flip-flopping: the administration initially stated that no payments would be made, then offered partial coverage from emergency funds, later committed to 50% and most recently pledged 65%.

A U.S. District Judge in Rhode Island issued the federal order on Thursday. The Trump administration appealed the decision on Friday. Soon after, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes joined officials from 24 other states and Washington D.C. in urging a federal appeals court to reject that appeal.

“No Arizonan should be forced to go without food on their table because they’re being used by Washington, DC politicians as leverage in their negotiations,” Hobbs said.
