Small plane from Mesa reported missing

PHOENIX — A search is under way for a small plane out of Mesa that failed to arrive in Winslow as scheduled.

The Civil Air Patrol has been searching an area northwest of Payson, where the plane was last tracked on radar and where passengers last used a cellphone.

Patrol Col. Bob Ditch said search flights over the area have not been able to pick up any emergency locator beacon.

Gila County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Johnson said his department has teams on standby.

The FAA said the single-engine Piper with three on board took off from Falcon Field on Thursday at 2:20 p.m., with a planned stop in Payson.

The flight school that operates the aircraft, CAE Global Academy Phoenix, reported the plane overdue when it didn’t arrive in Winslow at the scheduled 4:20 p.m.
