Sky Harbor rolls out ReBokeh assistive technology for travelers with low vision

Phoenix Sky Harbor is partnering with ReBokeh Vision Technologies to provide travelers and staff with free, unlimited access to its assistive technology software for people with low vision.

The partnership also provides Deer Valley Airport and Goodyear Airport with the technology as they are owned and operated by the city of Phoenix.

“This partnership with ReBokeh reflects our dedication to expanding accessibility through innovation, and we’re proud that Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport … is leading the way in creating a more inclusive travel experience for people with low vision,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a news release. “The City of Phoenix is committed to ensuring that every traveler has the resources they need to navigate our airports with confidence and independence.”

The technology is meant to empower and serve blind and low-vision people who retain some functional sight by allowing them to use the vision they have instead of replacing it with audio or tactile descriptions.

It is a mobile app that uses phone’s live camera feed with overlayed, customized filters that adjusts different aspects, such as the contrast, color hue, zoom and lighting, to meet users needs.

It also has a new feature called ReBokeh AI, which people can ask personalized questions about what’s around them and what they’re seeing. The AI works in multiple languages and will default to whatever language is selected in the device’s general settings, meaning it can also be used as a translation tool for signage, information and other visual surroundings.

“Traveling with low vision can present unique challenges, particularly when it comes to navigating a busy airport,” Rebecca Rosenberg, the low-vision founder and CEO of ReBokeh, said. “We’re thrilled that Phoenix Airport is doubling down on its commitment to accessibility by leveraging ReBokeh’s technology to build a more independent and enjoyable experience for travelers with low vision.”
