PHOENIX — A busy airport does not necessarily mean flights will be delayed. At least, that’s not the case if you’re flying in or out of Sky Harbor International Airport.

A report from Reward Expert found that while the Phoenix airport is the eighth-busiest with an average of 3,503 flights over Labor Day weekend, it’s also one of the most reliable. Sky Harbor ranked fourth-best in the study with 88.5 percent of the flights being on time.

Only flying out of Honolulu, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis-Saint Paul are more efficient, according to the study.

Phoenix’s hub ranks just ahead of airports in Charlotte, Seattle-Tacoma, Dallas/Forth Worth and Atlanta; the Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta is also the busiest with an average of 8,194 flights over Labor Day weekend.

How can travelers avoid the crowds over the holiday weekend?

Traveling the Wednesday or Thursday before the weekend provides the most likelihood of a flight being on time. The Friday heading into the weekend and the Tuesday after it offer the highest likelihood of delays.

Reward Expert recommends flying during the weekend. Saturday, Sunday and Monday see the fewest numbers of delayed flights before airports get crowded again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sky Harbor is great. Been through there for many holidays. I'll say Reagan National is probably one the best and most efficient airports. I'd put it on par, if not above, Sky Harbor. From stepping off the Metro or on the curb, you could be through TSA and in your terminal in 15min. Hard to believe TSA hassles you less in the Nations capital than they do in places like SLC, SFA, and even Orlando. Lol

I can't believe Charlotte was so high. That's insane. I'd rather fly through Detroit than the octopus mess Charlotte has for an airport. One of the few airports where I had to leave the terminal and go BACK through TSA to another terminal to get to a CONNECTING flight (same airline!). Lol

Been to many airports and Sky Harbor has been consistently one of the best one's I've been through. The simple configuration is easy to navigate. It's so easy to navigate that I stopped escorting my son to the ticket counter to check baggage and to the gate when he was between 10-12. I could drop him off at the terminal and he could check in at the counter, check his bag, get through security, get something to eat and get to the gate himself without getting lost. I've been in airports where each terminal was different. Terminals that had crappy amenities and you're stuck in a long layover. Airports where their tram shuts down in lightning it ends up taking you 30-45 minutes to walk to your gate. Airports where you practically need a bus to get anywhere because they centrally locate all services then branch out into terminals; but you get to walk all of it. Airports with confusing signs. Airports with confusing arrival and departure lanes, based on type of vehicle. West side? No east side because you are going to this hotel. Are you kidding me? Ok, rant over now lol.
