Skateboarder killed in crash with Arizona police vehicle

A skateboarder reportedly has died following a collision with a Flagstaff police vehicle last week.

PHOENIX — A skateboarder reportedly has died following a collision with a Flagstaff police vehicle last week.

ABC 15 identified the man as 22-year-old Derek Blakely.

The collision occurred around 11:53 p.m. on June 3, according to the Flagstaff Police Department.

Details on the crash involving the skateboarder

An officer was driving northbound in a marked patrol car on Milton Road approaching Route 66 when Blakely — riding a self-balancing, single-wheel electric skateboard — entered the roadway, resulting in the crash, according to police.

Blakely sustained serious injuries from the crash, the officer provided aid before he was taken to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

The skateboarder was probably blinded by that garish, huge flag on the side of a public vehicle. The whole vehicle looks like a combination military transport/park ranger jeep.
