Silver Alert canceled for 84-year-old Gilbert man believed to have dementia

PHOENIX —  A Silver Alert was canceled Saturday afternoon for a Gilbert man believed to have dementia, the Department of Public Safety said.

Samuel Contreras, 84, was found in good health in Mesa around 4 p.m. Saturday.

Around 7 p.m. Friday, he left his home near Arizona Avenue and Guadalupe Road on foot.

Contreras “is known to ask strangers for rides to Casa Grande or California,” DPS said.

He has lived there since May, but had lived in Mexico for 24 years prior and is unfamiliar with the area, DPS said.

DPS said he “likes to use the bus system to travel away from the residence.”

Contreras was last seen in a brown and tan collared shirt with horizantal stripes, black pants with a large belt buckle and black shoes.

He was also wearing a black baseball hat with the Caterpillar Equipment logo on the front.

During a previous time Contreras went missing, he was found sleeping at Dobson Road and Main Street in Mesa.
