Armed suspect shot and killed by police at Chandler intersection

PHOENIX – Police shot and killed an armed suspect at a Chandler intersection on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The man was carrying a rifle when he was shot near the intersection of Pecos and McQueen roads, according to the Chandler Police Department. 

What led to the armed suspect being shot and killed?

Officers responded to a call about an unknown person trying to enter a home near Frye Road and Windstream Place around 6:50 a.m., police said.

The caller told police that the person was arguing with their father in the garage.

Officers arrived at the home within four minutes, according to the department.

The suspect then drove away from the scene.

As the man drove away, officers said he crashed into multiple police vehicles, leading them to start a short pursuit.

Police were able to box the suspect in after he collided with a white Jeep.

Afterwards officers gave the suspect orders to get out of his car, which is when he tried to run away while carrying the rifle.

That is when he was shot by police, authorities said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The intersection of Pecos and McQueen was closed while the scene was under investigation. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Detectives with the Mesa Police Department will investigate the officer-involved shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.

It was the second deadly police shooting in the Valley this week. On Tuesday, a Phoenix Police officer shot and killed a man who was carrying a hatchet at an IHOP restaurant.
