PHOENIX — Two shoplifting suspects were hospitalized with serious injuries after allegedly jumping off an Interstate 10 bridge in Goodyear to evade arrest on Sunday, according to authorities.

Police responded to a reported shoplifting near McDowell and Dysart roads around 5:30 p.m., thanks to a caller who provided a location and description of the vehicle involved.

When police arrived, the suspected shoplifters eluded officers and stopped on the freeway near Dysart Road. At that point, a man and a woman allegedly exited a vehicle and jumped off the bridge, causing serious injuries.

Both were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Three others stayed in the vehicle and were detained.

Traffic on the I-10 saw evening delays as a result of the incident.

An investigation is ongoing. No other information was provided.
