2 arrested, including teenage robbery suspect, after exchanging gunfire in Mesa

PHOENIX – Two people were arrested, including a 13-year-old robbery suspect, after they exchanged gunfire Tuesday night in Mesa, authorities said.

The teen, whose name was not released, was wounded in the shootout after he allegedly robbed a man who was there to buy a ring listed on OfferUp, according to the Mesa Police Department.

When Brandon Major, 20, arrived for the purchase near McKellips Road and Stapley Drive just before 8 p.m., the teenage seller allegedly pulled out a handgun and robbed him.

When the suspected thief ran away, Major allegedly pulled out his own handgun and shot at the teen, striking him in the leg. The boy shot back but didn’t hit Major.

Several homes in the area were damaged by the gunfire.

What happened after shootout in Mesa?

Officers responded to the scene in response to multiple calls about gunfire, including one from a parent of the robbery suspect, who suffered a minor gunshot wound.

Meanwhile, the Mesa Police Real Time Crime Center identified a suspicious vehicle leaving the area. Officers stopped the vehicle and detained Major.

The teen was booked into a juvenile detention center for armed robbery, aggravated assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm and minor in possession of a firearm.

Major was also arrested for his role in the shootout. He was booked into jail on counts of aggravated assault, endangerment, and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
