Man dead after shooting involving Gilbert police officers

PHOENIX — A shooting on Wednesday evening involving officers with the Gilbert Police Department left a man dead, authorities said.

The shooting took place after officers were dispatched for a welfare check near the intersection of Lindsay and Guadalupe Roads around 6 p.m.

They had been told a male driver was slumped over behind the vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Guadalupe Road, police said.

Officers knocked on the window and woke up the driver, but when the asked him to exit the vehicle, he took out a firearm, police said.

Police officers then shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

No Gilbert police officers or other civilians were injured.

The Mesa Police Department will be investigating this shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
