Shake it! Video of dancing Phoenix police officer goes viral

PHOENIX — A video of a Phoenix police officer dancing at a block party has gone viral on Facebook.

The video, posted to the department’s Facebook page, shows Lt. Tom Van Dorn grooving to “Uptown Funk You Up” by Bruno Mars at a Si Se Puede block party in Maryvale last week. It has been viewed more than 110,000 times.

Attendees asked Van Dorn to join in and dance to help get the neighborhood kids to be more active. While Van Dorn at first thinks he can bust his own moves, he quickly realizes he’s taking a zumba — an aerobic workout that uses dancing — class right there in the park.

Van Dorn dances for a bit before he really starts picking up the steps. For some reason, just as he seems to be nailing them, he calls it quits with a smile and a wave of his hand.

“I firmly believe in the community based policing philosophy and finding ways to connect,” he said after.

The department thanked Van Dorn for being a good sport and allowing the video to be posted online. We’d have to agree.
