Sen. McSally explains proposed military sexual assault legislation

PHOENIX — Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) appeared on the ABC television show “This Week” to discuss her proposed legislation to change how the military handles sexual assault.

Her proposal revolves around getting commanders more involved sooner in the investigation process, an idea that has been up for debate and denounced by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.).

“Let’s set the process up for the best success,” McSally said. “That’s what the focus is of my legislation this year.”

Duckworth and McSally are both veterans who served in the U.S. military and sit on the Senate committee on armed forces.

“I respect her opinion and we have had many conversations about this issue. I just feel very strongly that commanders need to be responsible,” McSally said

In a hearing in March, McSally said that during her time as an Air Force combat pilot, a superior officer had raped her.
