Courthouse guard wounded in Phoenix drive-by shooting; suspect detained

PHOENIX – A security guard was wounded Tuesday in a drive-by shooting outside a federal court building in downtown Phoenix, and a suspect was later detained, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. in front of the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse, which is at the corner of Washington Street and Fourth Avenue.

FBI spokeswoman Jill McCabe told KTAR News 92.3 FM in an email around 2 p.m. that one person was in custody in connection with the assault of an officer and there was no ongoing threat to public safety.

The court security officer works for the U.S. Marshals Service and was hit in a protective vest, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The Phoenix Police Department said one person was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life threatening.

Police released a photo of a car seen leaving the area and asked the public for information about it.

The FBI, which is investigating the incident, asked anybody with information to call 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377).

Washington Street between Fourth and Seventh avenues was expected to be closed for the rest of the afternoon.

No other information was immediately available.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the person who was shot was a U.S. Marshal. The person was actually a courthouse security guard contracted by the U.S. Marshal Service.
