Scottsdale to feature craft beer brewed with recycled water at fall event

PHOENIX — A Scottsdale plant that was recently permitted to treat recycled water for direct potable use says it will first start introducing the water through breweries.

“Convincing people that water from their sinks, showers, washing machines and, yes, toilets, can be cleaned to ultrapure standards can be a tough sell, but through education and transparency, I’m confident we’ll get there,” public information officer Nicole Sherbert said in a press release.

The Advanced Water Treatment Plant at the Scottsdale Water Campus will feature 10 Valley craft beers made with recycled water at the Canal Convergence on Nov. 8-9.

The plant also plans to educate consumers by allowing them to taste the purified water during tours.

The facility is the first in the state and the third in the nation to be issued a permit to treat recycled water for direct potable uses.

While the plant has long been capable of exceeding bottled water standards, using recycled water for direct potable use was prohibited in Arizona until last year, the release said.

The city said it will not introduce recycled water into the drinking system yet, but it has plans to pursue it as a “long-term water source.”

“We are extremely proud to help not just Arizona cities, but communities worldwide, establish a path toward direct potable reuse and long-term water sustainability,” Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer said in the release.
