PHOENIX — The votes are in and the newest canine officer at the Scottsdale Police Department has a name — thanks to almost 3,700 online votes.
Chase is the name online voters picked for the new crisis response canine, who is replacing Fozzie, a dog who died in October. That canine officer served nearly 10 years on the force.
Fozzie was the nation’s first full-time crisis response canine and was a pioneer for public safety agencies, according to the department.
Earlier this month, the department welcomed Chase, an 11-month-old chocolate Labrador to its Crisis Response K9 program.
The department held an online contest where participants voted through Dec. 11.
The department narrowed names to five possible choices and Chase garnered the most — 24 percent of the vote. The second-most name voted on was Charlie with 865 votes, followed by Chip with 702 votes.
The dog will continue Fozzie’s legacy in the Crisis Response K9 program, the department said.
The canine was donated by Tish Dittman from Zona Labradors and will be trained by Julie Banfill with Dogology.
The department said Chase will serve as a goodwill ambassador and help out with community outreach including visiting schools and providing emotional support to current public safety officials.
