Scottsdale implements restrictions on e-bike riders under 16

PHOENIX – Scottsdale is implementing new restrictions on e-bike riders who are too young to drive a car and businesses that sell the motorized devices.

Three ordinances related to electronic bicycle usage and sales went into effect Thursday after the City Council approved them on July 1.

The Scottsdale e-bike regulations are designed to help parents and guardians know which devices are appropriate for their children.

What are the new Scottsdale e-bike regulations?

Under one new ordinance, people under 16 years old are prohibited from riding class 3 e-bikes or similar devices that can reach speeds of at least 21 mph in the city. In addition, it prohibits electric motorcycles that aren’t titled and registered with the state from being operated on a city street.

The two other ordinances cover Scottsdale businesses that sell the restricted class of e-bikes. One requires sellers to display a sign stating that people under 16 are not allowed to ride them. They also must give buyers educational material on the matter.

The third ordinance requires sellers to put permanent stickers on class 3 e-bikes for easy identification.

A violation of any of the new regulations carries a minimum fine of $100.
