Salt River Project accepting applications from Valley nonprofits for free solar system

PHOENIX — Salt River Project is accepting applications from Valley nonprofits interested in receiving a free solar system.

Charities that contribute as little as $3 a month to SRP’s Solar for Nonprofits program are eligible to receive the system.

They must also be designated 501(c)(3) organizations, have their headquarters within SRP’s electric service territory and have the necessary parking space.

“The solar systems SRP Solar for Nonprofits installs help offset energy costs for nonprofits, which allows these organizations to focus more on their community-oriented objectives,” Darrell Bearden, manager of distributed energy programs at SRP, said in a press release.

SRP has given out 53 solar systems to nonprofits since the program started in 2007.

The utility added that the program has cut costs for those businesses by more than a $1 million with its renewable, emission-free energy.

“These systems also increase the amount of renewable energy on SRP’s power system, contributing to our overall carbon reduction goals,” Bearden said.

Nonprofits have until Aug. 14 to apply.

Winners will be notified in mid-September, according to SRP.
