Runner dies participating in 250-mile Arizona race, the Cocodona 250

A runner in a 250-mile race that stretches across Arizona has died.

“We are deeply saddened to share that a participant experienced a serious medical emergency today during the event and has passed away,” organizers of the Cocodona 250 wrote on social media posts late Tuesday. “The runner’s family and crew have been notified.”

“Our team is supporting those directly involved and will share more only when appropriate.”

The race, which draws ultramarathon runners from across the country and a few from overseas, begins in Black Canyon City and ends in Flagstaff.

“The race is going to continue in their honor. We ask all participants and crew to carry the memory of this runner with you on the trail,” event organizers wrote.

What is the Cocodona 250 ultramarathon?

Organized by the Arizona-based Aravaipa Running, the Cocodona 250 runs winds through Crown King, Prescott, Jerome and Sedona before ending in downtown Flagstaff.

The race starts in the high desert and begins at 1,996 feet of elevation, climbing to a highest point of 9,241 feet on Mount Elden just outside Flagstaff.

It has grown in popularity since its first iteration in 2021.

According to the race tracker, there were 395 participants between men and women in the 250-mile race this year. There are additional 125- and 100-mile courses as part of the event.

The 250-mile race began Monday, with the top runners finishing on Wednesday.

Rachel Entrekin, who has won the women’s category the past two years, became the first woman to win the overall field in a time of 56 hours, 9 minutes and 48 seconds, a new overall course record.

She was among a 2026 Cocodona 250 field that included four past champions.
