PHOENIX — Two people were injured in a rollover crash on State Route 51 on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The accident, which blocked the right lanes of the freeway for a couple hours, involved three vehicles including one that rolled over, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).

A vehicle struggling with engine issues was slowing to a stop when it was struck by a pickup truck, causing a chain reaction crash, according to DPS spokesperson Bart Graves.

“The truck in turn was struck by a GMC Terrain that overturned several times according to witnesses,” Graves told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Two people in the GMC Terrain were injured. One person sustained life-threatening injuries, while another person had injuries that were described as serious.

“This may go fatal,” Graves said.

Due to the crash, northbound traffic temporarily stopped, causing significant backup that started clearing up around 3:45 p.m.

No further details were made available.
