Bystander in car with family dead, suspect in custody after Glendale road rage shooting

PHOENIX – A suspect is behind bars after a bystander was killed by a bullet fired during a road rage incident in Glendale over the weekend, authorities said.

Jesus Preciado Dousten, 33, allegedly fired the shot that killed 27-year-old Yarely Ashley Hermosillo after he exchanged words with another driver, the Glendale Police Department said in a media advisory Monday.

The shooting occurred just before midnight Friday at the intersection of 51st Avenue and Camelback Road.

Hermosillo was riding in an SUV with her boyfriend, mother and 3-year-old son when a bullet struck her in the face, according to court records.

The victim’s SUV was stopped at a red light alongside the vehicles involved in the road rage incident.

The boyfriend drove Hermosillo to a hospital in Phoenix, but she did not survive her injuries.

Hospital staff notified the Phoenix Police Department about the shooting. The Glendale Police Department took over the investigation after it was determined that the shooting occurred in Glendale.

How did police identify road rage shooting suspect?

Investigators used surveillance video, phone location data and other evidence to identify Dousten as the suspect.

Police tracked Dousten to an apartment in Glendale and took him into custody Saturday night.

He was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangerment and prohibited weapons possession.

Dousten has a previous criminal record that includes convictions for attempted vehicle theft, unlawful flight from law enforcement and resisting arrest, police said.

Furthermore, investigators believe he may have been involved in an unsolved Phoenix road rage case from earlier this year.

A man filed a police report after a June 9 incident that involved a vehicle matching the description of Dousten’s pickup truck. The victim said he was punched in the face by the driver of the truck after it collided with him near 27th Avenue and Beardsley Road.
