PHOENIX — The South Mountain Freeway project will be making a major stride this weekend as developers will be pouring concrete for a fly over ramp connecting Interstate 10 into the West Valley.
The construction will cause closures on the westbound I-10 between 51st and 67th avenues from 10 p.m. on Friday to 4 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Eastbound I-10 will be closed from 4 a.m. Saturday through 2 p.m. Sunday between 51st and 67th avenues.
The closures are expected to be lifted before the end of the Arizona Cardinals game against the 49ers at State Farm Stadium, which begins at 1:25 p.m.
To avoid heavy backups, the three on-ramps ahead of each construction zone (westbound at 27th, 35th and 43rd avenues and eastbound at 91st, 83rd and 75th avenues) will be closed at the times corresponding with their directional closures.
Van Buren Street and McDowell Road were suggested as detour routes for motorists.
ADOT also announced that 59th Avenue will be closed in both directions between I-10 and Roosevelt Street from 9 p.m. Friday through 2 p.m. Sunday.
As for Interstate 17, the northbound side will be closed at Greenway Road from 9 p.m. on Friday to 5 p.m. on Sunday for bridge repair.
ADOT recommended taking northbound State Route 51 to westbound Loop 101 as an alternate route.
Northbound I-17 will also be closed between the I-10 “split” interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the I-10 “stack” interchange near McDowell Road from 6 a.m. on Saturday to 5 a.m. on Monday for pavement improvement.
