Report: US House bill allocates $1.6B for border wall construction
A U.S. House bill reportedly included a $1.6 billion budget item for the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico.

PHOENIX — A U.S. House bill reportedly included a $1.6 billion budget item for the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico.
The Hill, a newspaper that covers Washington, D.C., reported the bill was released by the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday.
“Keeping Americans safe by protecting our homeland is a top priority,” House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee Chairman John Carter told the paper.
“This funding bill provides the resources to begin building a wall along our southern border, enhance our existing border security infrastructure, hire more border patrol agents, and fund detention operations.”
DHS spokesman David Lapan said the bill would move the wall beyond the realm of prototypes and into one that is closer to reality.
“On the DHS side it’s clear that we’ve gotten a direction to secure the southern border, that a wall and barrier is part of that process along with people and technology and that funding from Congress is required for us to move forward on that,” he told the Hill.
More details about the wall — such as the specific locations where it will be built and where the funding is coming from — were expected to be released next week.
By releasing the bill, the House Appropriations Committee partially kept the promise of President Donald Trump to build a wall along the border with Mexico.
The bill would use taxpayer money to pay for the wall. It would not be funded by Mexico, as Trump promised on the campaign trail.
