Report: ICE deported nearly 27,000 people from Phoenix this fiscal year

PHOENIX — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the agency deported nearly 27,000 people from Phoenix, according to its 2018 fiscal year report released last week.

The report showed that the number of removals in Phoenix increased by 29 percent compared to last fiscal year.

The agency also arrested more than 7,000 immigrants in Phoenix, an 11 percent increase from the previous year.

Nationally, the number of immigrants arrested — more than 158,000 — increased by 11 percent from the previous year.

The agency said 90 percent of those arrested either had criminal convictions, pending criminal charges or previously issued final orders.

Initial detention facility bookings increased nationally, too — more than 396,000 people were booked into an ICE facility, a 22.5 percent rise from last fiscal year.

The report showed that, nationally, the agency deported about 256,000 people living illegally in the U.S., a 13 percent increase from the previous year.

Convicted criminals made up 57 percent of those removals, the agency said, and almost 6,000 of those were either known or suspected gang members or terrorists.
