Repairs to begin on Arizona highway near Phoenix

PHOENIX — A stretch of an Arizona highway east of Phoenix will be restricted starting Monday for two months of emergency repair work.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said drivers along State Route 88 (aka Apache Trail) should expect up to 20-minute delays weekdays for the next two months as repairs to the road that was damaged by flooding were made.

Work between Apache Junction and Canyon Lake was scheduled for 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane in half-mile increments, the department said, and a pilot vehicle was set to guide drivers through the work zone.

The project affects the road between mileposts 196 and 220.

Monsoon storms in July caused flooding all around the Valley.

Several roads in Apache Junction were closed during one storm, which dumped an inch of rain in nearby Gold Canyon in six hours, according to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

A flash flood warning went into effect.

A separate project for safety improvement and pavement preservation was to begin after the repairs.

That work was expected to last up to a year and will close the road in both directions.
