Critically ill pug gets life-saving blood donation from rescued pit bull at Arizona Humane Society

A 2-year-old pug fighting for her life received a massive helping hand from a rescued pit bull and Arizona Humane Society veterinarians.

Tilly, the pug, suffered from severe anemia and dehydration after arriving at AHS’ Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital about a month and a half earlier, according to a Thursday press release.

American pit bull terrier Rowlan, 7, was healthy and far enough removed from being an injured stray to provide a life-saving blood transfusion. Tilly’s condition improved almost as soon as the transfusion was made, AHS said.

“Seeing one rescued dog help save another is a powerful reminder of why this work matters,” AHS president and CEO Dr. Steven Hansen said. “Rowlan’s blood donation gave Tilly the life-saving boost she needed.”

He emphasized that Tilly’s recovery was made possible by an entire team working together.

“At the Arizona Humane Society, we are a trauma hospital first, which means our veterinary team is equipped to provide advanced medical care for homeless pets facing life-threatening condition,” Hansen said. “That level of care is only possible because of our community’s support, allowing us to give pets like Tilly a second chance at life.”

Rowlan has since fully recovered and is now in a forever home in Phoenix. Tilly remains in the care of one of her veterinarians and is still receiving treatment.

AHS said it is only able to perform these sorts of procedures through community support. During the Urgent Summer Fund Drive, any donations it receives through Aug. 15 will be matched up to $50,000, courtesy of Smead Capital Management.

It will also hold another adoption event this weekend (Saturday-Sunday). Adoption fees will be completely waived for pets at least 1 year old, and fees will be cut in half for those under 1 year.
