Prescott BAER team to assess impact of Cellar Fire

PHOENIX — A team of specialists has started to assess the impacts of the Cellar Fire in Prescott.

The Prescott National Forest Burned Area Emergency Response team (BAER) is analyzing the impact the fire had on the area, according to a release.

The team consists of soil scientists, archaeologists, hydrologists, wildlife biologists and other specialists.

Initially, the BAER team will begin with days of field collection. It will then complete a values-at-risk assessment to prioritize work within the fire area.

A report will be given to Prescott Forest Service officials following the completion of the project.

The team’s assessment is important because wildfires, like the Cellar Fire, can create an increased risk for post-fire flooding, soil erosion and debris that could impact structures in the area.

As of Sunday, the fire was 80% contained. The blaze burned through approximately 7,512 acres.

The fire sparked July 14 from lightning.
