Power back on across area of Pinal County hit hard by monsoon storms

PHOENIX – The power was fully restored by Wednesday morning in an area of Pinal County hit hard by monsoon storms Sunday night, officials said.

A day after more than 7,000 Arizona Public Service customers were without electricity in Eloy and Arizona City, only 10 were still without power early Wednesday. The final outage was resolved before 11 a.m., APS said.

The shelter set up at Toltec Middle School remained open Wednesday, but the one at Santa Cruz Valley Union High School was deactivated.

Area residents can still pick up wet ice while it lasts at the Arizona City Golf Course and Eloy Fire Station, according to county officials.

More than 10,000 customers were without power at the peak of the outage after storms Sunday night and Monday morning brought down transmission towers and lines.

APS, the state’s largest public utility, said Tuesday that crews were working through the night to restore service.

The Pinal County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday evening declared a State of Emergency related to the storm damage and power outages in Eloy and neighboring Arizona City.

Eloy is about 65 miles southeast of downtown Phoenix off Interstate 10.

Sunday night storms also temporarily knocked out power for about 70,000 APS and Salt River Project customers in metro Phoenix.

About 60 SRP customers in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community north of Mesa were still without electricity as of Wednesday morning.

SRP expected to have all service restored by Wednesday afternoon.
