LISTEN: Kim, Car Shot on the 51 Freeway

PHOENIX — A woman who may have been a victim of a Phoenix freeway shooting said she’s still trying to figure out what happened after a side window was fractured.

Kim, who did not give her last name, said she was driving northbound on State Route 51 on Thursday about 10:30 a.m. when she thought another driver hit her car.

“It’s a sound I’ve never heard,” she told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes on Friday.

Kim said she looked in the rear-view mirror for the culprit, but saw nothing. Her mother, sitting in the passenger seat, looked behind Kim’s head at the window behind the driver’s seat.

“‘I think we just got shot,’” Kim said, quoting her mother.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is still looking into Kim’s case. She said officers drove her back through the scene to check for vantage points, but she couldn’t help much.

“What could I have done? I didn’t even see anybody,” she said, adding that her mother told officers there was a truck driving near them at the time.

“The scary thing was there was nothing out of the ordinary – I didn’t cut anybody off, there wasn’t a lot of traffic,” she said.

If it is determined that Kim is another victim in a growing list of those hit by gunfire or projectiles in on Phoenix freeways, she would be the 12th confirmed shooting victim on Valley freeways since late August.

Kim said, after hearing about the shootings, she had been avoiding Interstate 10.

“I thought I was safe on the 51,” she said.

A $20,000 reward has been posted for information leading to the arrest of the suspected serial shooter. DPS can be contacted at 602-644-5805.
