Portions of Phoenix metro area experiencing rain, high winds

PHOENIX — Residents in different parts of the Valley are getting a taste of the monsoon season as they head into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, central and east Phoenix is seeing increased monsoon activity.

The main threat to the area are high winds and lightning.

The activity is expected to slowly increase until 8 p.m.

A flash flood warning was issued for the Phoenix area until 11:15 p.m.

The service also issued a significant weather advisory for Maricopa County until 8:30 p.m. The advisory induces Scottsdale, Mesa and Tempe.

Heavy rainfall, hail, lightning and winds in excess of 40 mph are expected.

With the rainfall, Phoenix ended its dry streak at 103 days, tied for the 21st longest stint since 1895.

Additionally, the National Weather Service issued a significant weather advisory for Pinal County area until 9 p.m.

Winds in excess of 40 mph, heavy rainfall and lightning are possible threats in the area, the service said.
